Communication
● All work requires good communication.
● Bad communication can lead to bad working relationships. This will
affect the whole company.
● All communication must be positive. This means the message has been
communicated clearly, simply and successfully. Negative
communication can lead to delays.
What would happen if someone doesn’t understand something you have
written or said?

Taking a message
One of the most common reasons for communication is to pass a message
on.
There are certain things you must always record for a message:
● Date
● Time
● Contact name and details
The topic can be recorded but it may be too complex.
What is the most important thing to record?

Policies and site rules
● All companies have policies in the workplace. Employees must follow
these.
● A policy states what a company expects to be done.
● Site rules cover safety and security on site. Some policies will control
rules on site.

Methods of communication
The main methods of communication are:
● Verbal – instant and easy to repeat, but can be forgotten
● Written – physical evidence of the message but takes longer to arrive
and can be misunderstood
● Body language – quick and effective but can be misunderstood
● Electronic – instant, easy and a record of what has been sent. Can send
a vast amount of information, but is reliant on signal and can be a
potential security risk
Which form of communication do you think we use the most?
