People with a learning disability may have additional communication needs.(Brown
2005)
It is therefore important in providing individualised care within a person centred care
plan to establish a therapeutic relationship with an individual so as to best
understand those individual needs.(Turnbull 2008)
We need to be mindful to ensure that there are sufficient resources to accommodate
the building of successful therapeutic relationships.(DOH 2001)
Where communication is successful and based on empathy, genuineness and
respect an individual feels valued and therefore empowered. (Rogers 1956)
