Phonics
Name the letters of the alphabet and say the sounds that they
make. (Use pure sounds.)
Hear the sounds at the beginning, middle and end of a word.
Use their understanding of sounds to read and spell a variety of
words.
Read tricky words (words you cannot sound out using phonics e.g.
the).
Phonological terms:• Grapheme = the visual
representation of the letter
• Phoneme = an individual unit of
sound (e.g. s,a,t,p, ch, air)
• Digraph = one sound made by two
letters (e.g. ch, ow, ee )
• Trigraph = one sound made by three
letters (e.g. igh, ure )
