Tracking Changes in MS Word
Track Changes
• Allows you to keep track of the changes you make
to a document
• Extremely helpful when more than one person is
giving input.
• You can also make “hidden” comments to others
• Will allow you to see who made the suggestions
• Allows you to do all of this without actually
changing the original document until you are
ready to do so.
Track Changes
• Making insertions – Inserting some added text to
a document
• Making deletions – Removing text from a
document
• Adding a comment – Comments will not become
part of the final document. They are the just the
thoughts that you are sharing with the others
working on the document
Let’s give track changes a try…
Work on Project 1
• Finish research
• Write up your 3-5 paragraphs
• Begin editing using track changes
Synchronous & Asynchronous
Communication
Asynchronous Communication
• Communication that does NOT occur in
real time
• Allows you to “say” things when you want
to without necessarily having the other (s)
“listening” at that moment.
• Email is asynchronous, you have to wait for
the recipient to read it
Synchronous communication
• Communicating in real-time
• Once you “say” something the other(s)
immediately “hear” you and can
immediately respond
• Instant messaging and chat are two
examples of synchronous communication
Instant Messaging
• Instant Messaging (IM) is an Internet
protocol that lets you send and receive
instant messages
– An instant message is an electronic notification
of a new message that appears automatically
on your computer screen
• “Buddy” lists are used to limit outside IM
access to your computer to just those who
you wish to communicate with.
Instant Messaging
• Instant messaging had become so popular
that the term IM has now entered the
English language (both as a noun and a
verb)
Instant Messaging
• There are four major brands of IM:
– AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) has over 100
million users
– AOL-owned ICQ has 68 million users
– Microsoft’s MSN Messenger has 66 million users
– Yahoo Messenger has 63 million users
• As of now you can only IM those using the
same brand of IM
Instant Messaging
• Like with email, you can use a web version
of IM
– This often has more limited features
• You can also download IM programming
(like Yahoo messenger) which you then use
for IM
– This give you added features
Instant Messaging
• Though historically text only, you can now
use voice and/or video when using IM
• Like with email, you are communicating
with people, proper netiquette should be
followed.
