Communication
• What is Communication?
• Information exchanged between people
through a common system of symbols,
signs, or behaviour
• A symbol can be visual, auditory or tactile
How Do We
Communicate?
What is Augmentative Alternative
Communication (AAC)?
• AAC is any method that people
use if they cannot speak or write
by hand
What is AAC?
• People who use AAC may not be able
to speak verbally
• Or they may have difficulty speaking
clearly, so that everyone can
understand them
What is AAC?
• Physically they may not be able to
handwrite
• So they may need to use special
equipment that will help them access
the computer to write
How do people who use AAC
Communicate?
• Objects or textures can be held or felt to represent
a choice
• Facial expressions, body gestures, and
vocalizations is the way the person who uses AAC
may make his/her choice
How do people who use AAC
Communicate?
• They may use symbols instead of their
voice to communicate a message
• All kinds of different types of symbols that
represent words, phrases or sentences
How do people who use AAC
Communicate?
• They may use sign language
How do people who use AAC
Communicate?
• They may point to a symbol on a
picture/word board to say a message
• Or they may need a helper to point for them

• They may use a button that can speak a
recorded message

• They may use a talking device, that may
