Introduction
Gr. ‘angelía’ = message
Angeletics and angelology
Angeletics in a narrow sense
Angeletics in a wider sense
Message and information
‘informatio’: moulding matter, moulding
the mind

of Communication, ZKM, July 4-6,

I. Angeletics as an interdisciplinary
theory
Shannon’s theory of message transmission
(1948)
The concept of message: sender-dependent,
new, relevant, media/messenger, selection
Luhmann’s concepts of message
(“Mitteilung”), information (“Information”)
and understanding (“Verstehen”)

I. Angeletics as an interdisciplinary...
An ideal situation:
a sender addresses a receiver, sending him/her a
message that is new and relevant,
a messenger brings the message undistorted to
the receiver,
a receiver reserves judgement, based on a
process of interpretation, about whether the
message is true or not.

of Communication, ZKM, July 4-6,

I. Angeletics as an interdisciplinary...
The sender should follow the ‘principle of
respect’
The messenger should follow the ‘principle
of faithfulness’
The receiver should follow the “principle of
reservation’

I. Angeletics as an interdisciplinary...
Flusser’s communicology:
dialogical goal: creation of new information
discursive goal: distribution of information
A “message society”
Angeletics and hermeneutics
Mediatic nihilism or a “time of empty
angels”
Nietzsche’s Dysangelium

II. Angeletics at the Crossroad of
Hermeneutics and Biology
DNA-messages and the ‘postal paradigm’
Weizsäcker’s view of information: back to
‘idea’ and ‘morphe’ (Plato, Aristotle)
Koichiro Matsuno’s young fellow
What does it mean ‘to in-form’ a cell?
Messages and time: the internal and the
external perspective

II. Angeletics at the Crossroad...
Heidegger’s existential hermeneutics or the
pragmatic turn in epistemology
Pears or apples?
What does it mean ‘being addressed by
something’?
Hermeneutic or practical understanding
(know how) and theoretical interpretation
(know that)

II. Angeletics at the Crossroad...
Change-over:
situation -> pre-understanding (need) -> choice
-> situation...
message -> release mechanism -> response ->
message...
know how -> breakdown -> interpretation ->
know that -> ...
Weizsäcker’s “objectivised semantics”
R. Capurro: Angeletics, Hierarchies
of Communication, ZKM, July 4-6,

II. Angeletics at the Crossroad...
Implicit and explicit understanding
What is ‘is’?
Heidegger’s “being-in-the-world” as
“world-forming”
“world-poor”: the “own richness of
openness” of living beings
the horizon of choices
R. Capurro: Angeletics, Hierarchies
of Communication, ZKM, July 4-6,

II. Angeletics at the Crossroad...
Jerry Chandler and the “multiple dynamics
of form”: “organic communication can
admit error in the process of generating a
message, in the process of transmitting the
message or in the process of responding to
the message.”
‘form-as-message’ ontology and/as
epistemology
R. Capurro: Angeletics, Hierarchies
of Communication, ZKM, July 4-6,

Conclusion
Hierarchies of communication
Message as a second order category
Senders and receivers
The ‘hermeneutic circle’ as an angeletic
process
