Table 2.1. The Real Cost of Water.
Water Facts
Water Facts
• 2.5% of all Earth’s water is considered fresh (drinkable)
• Two-thirds of all fresh water is frozen
• Americans use about 100 gallons of water per day
• Many fresh water streams contain hormones and
antibiotics from prescription drugs flushed down toilets
• It takes about 2,500 gallons to make 1 lb of hamburger
• The US consumes 1,500 plastic water bottles every
second. Americans spent more money per year on
bottled water than on iPods or movie tickets: $15 billion
Water Facts
• Days of accessible, clean, free water are coming to an
end, experts predict
• The amount of clean water is fixed, yet the global
population continues to increase
• Climate change means more severe floods & droughts
affecting agriculture and food prices
• Experts predict that water is the new oil; wars will be
fought over water
Environmental
Crises
How will the tipping point
of environmental changes
affect your quality of life?
