What exactly is a Hutong?
A hutong is a alleyway between diffrent court yards. These
alleyways join together to create small communities.
When were they built?
Most hutongs today were built in the Qing Dynasty. In this
period of time China was in unrest. Citizens created these
alleys with what ever they could get their hand on.
Are they clean?
Sadly, no. After the dynastys ended hutongs got more and
more dirty. People who live in hutongs are mostly not well off.
What is in a hutong?
Hutongs are mainly spaces between houses. Sometimes people
sell foods and spices in them. In some places they are large
markets.
Why are they important?
Hutongs are reminders of the old china before the revolution.
They offer a look into the past. China is creating areas were
hutongs will be preserved.
How many are there?
Before China there were many Hutongs, but since the demand
for roads and bigger passage ways they are being destroyed to
create new roads and buildings.
