Royal Gardens in Beijing
Famous royal gardens in Beijing
include the Summer Palace (颐和园, Yi
he yuan), 北海 (Northern Sea, Beihai),
圆明园 (Round Bright Garden, yuan
ming yuan), 景山 (Scene Mountain, jing
shan), etc.
Most of them were built during the
Qing Dynasty, the last dynasty in
China’s history.
The Summer Palace (颐和园)
The Summer Palace was first built in 1750
by Qianlong Emperor, and burned in 1860 by
British and French invaders.
In 1886, Empress Dowager Cixi, the mother
of the emperor at that time and also the real
govenor, appropriated funds to build the first
Chinese navy, and used them to rebuild the
palace. Without a navy, China lost many
battles with foreign invaders through the
following years.
The two main parts of the Summer Palace are
Kunming Lake and Wanshou Mountain.

圆明园 (Round Bright Garden)
圆明园
was the largest and most
beautiful royal garden, built between 1709
and 1769. Numerous cultural relics and
jewels were in it.
In 1860,圆明园 was burned by British
and French invaders and all the valuables
were taken. Since that time, Chinese
people around the world have been trying
to buy them back. Currently, most of them
are still in the British museums.
