The Silk Road
The Silk road, which stretched over 4,000 miles from eastern China to the Mediterranean,
brought an exchange of goods and ideas between cultures. Silk was one of the main luxury
goods that came out of China and was prized by Europeans. Travelers along the road brought
Buddhism to China.

Tradition and Learning
The Han brought back traditional ideas, such as Confucianism. They also encouraged the arts
and scholarship. Scholar Sima Qian wrote a history of China, which remains a vital source
today.
Han Technology
Under the Han, there were many technological breakthroughs in the arts, medicine, and
farming implements. Paper was also first made during the Han dynasty, and its use eventually
spread throughout Asia and Europe, even replacing papyrus in Egypt.
