Sponsored by emperor Yong Le, there 7 voyages between
1405-1433.
Leader of the voyages was Zheng He, a Chinese Muslim.

The first voyage had 62 ships and close to 25,000 men.

The voyages were stopped because of the Confucian view

After Yong Le died the entire fleet was burned and
destroyed.
CH 16, sect. 2 – The Role of Women
Women were considered inferior to men in Chinese culture.
Women could not be educated, pursue a career in gov’t,
own property, or divorce their husbands
The only place women had any control was in the
household and family.
The Chinese practiced something called foot binding which
restricted the mobility of women.
Foot binding:
Bound feet were considered a status symbol and made
women more marriageable.
Estimates are one half to two thirds of women had bound
feet.
The process was started in childhood – feet of children were
bound tightly to cause them to deform.
The result was very small and pointy feet
