WAR OF 1812
Dec 24, 1814 –
Treaty of Ghent signed
Although both sides claimed victory, neither Britain nor the United States
really won the War of 1812. The Treaty of Ghent settled none of the issues
that had led to the fighting. Instead, the problems of impressment and ship
seizures faded away as peace settle over Europe.
Jan 8, 1815 –
Battle of New Orleans - Andrew Jackson defeats the British
but the war had been over for 2 Weeks - Jackson became a
national hero

• While you are reading, think about the answer to the following questions:
• What changes the British’s outlook on the war?
• Why was the Battle of New Orleans unnecessary?
• General Harrison found success at the Battle of Thames. Andrew Jackson was the hero of
the Battle of New Orleans. Both men later served as president of the United States.
