Jim Crow Laws(I Do)
After the end of Reconstruction, Southern state
governments passed “Jim Crow” laws requiring racial
segregation (separation of “white” and “colored”) in
public places.
These laws were upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in
Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)
The Ku Klux Klan terrorized African Americans and
prevented them from exercising their political rights.
Jim Crow Laws(I Do)
…By state law, whites and blacks attended different schools,
rode in separate railways cars, ate at different restaurants,
used different public toilets and water fountains, and sat on
different public benches. The facilities given to African
Americans were generally inferior.
