ISSUES NOT DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE CIVIL WAR
Beat the British!
The Americans wished to secure a treaty
with Asia before Great Britain. The
British humbled with China after the
Opium War gaining free access to five treaty
ports.
Tyler sends Cushing…
President Tyler then send Caleb Cushing, a “dashing” Massachusetts
lawyer scholar to counteract the British and secure a deal with China
for the United States.
Cushing arrives at Macao bearing gifts including weathervane and pair
of six-shooters.
Impressed by Cushing’s charm the Chinese agree to sign the Treaty of
Wanghia.

Japan comes out of their shell!
Formerly isolated and secluded, Japan decides to step out of their
comfort zone and join with America.
President Fillmore sends Matthew C. Perry (brother of Oliver Hazard
Perry) and fleet of warships to Japan.
Perry was prepared with knowledge of the Pacific Ocean currents and
gifts such as gold-trimmed boxes.
He handed Japan a silk-bound letter asking friendship and promising
to return the next year with their reply.

The Gadsden Purchase
James Gadsden
• James Gadsden was an American soldier and a diplomat.
• He was a soldier during the War of 1812.
• He was originally from South Carolina.
• He was appointed minister to Mexico in 1853 by President Franklin
Pierce.
Why Buy Mexican Territory?
• James Gadsden wanted to connect the Southern Railroad System to
the Western frontier because he wanted to link the Pacific and the
Atlantic Ocean.
• It was also beneficial to the South because the west was now
accessible to the South rather than the North.
The Land in Question
Purchase Details
• James Gadsden negotiated a treaty with Santa Anna on December 30,
1853 to purchase the area.
• The area was about 45,535 square miles.
• The United States of America purchased it for 33 cents an acre.
• This totaled to about $10,000,000.00.
The Effects of the Purchase
• The residents living in the purchased land now gained full US
Citizenship.
• The American cattle farmers of Arizona and Texas now gained that
land for gazing property.
• Silver Mines were opened on the land.
• The connection to the west via the Railroad was established.
The Railroad
• James Gadsden wanted to knit all Southern railroads into one system
and then to connect it with a Southern transcontinental railroad to
the Pacific, to make the West commercially dependent on the South
instead of the North.
