Pre-Columbus Era
• Approximately 18,000 B.C.
• 1,000 A.D.

During the last Ice Age, the Bering Straight froze over with ice,
allowing the wandering nomads to travel from Europe and Asia
across to the Americas, most likely to follow the great herds of
animals that were at that time, essential to their survival.

Columbus was NOT the 1ST European to walk the shores of North
America. A Viking named Leif Ericson visited North America in
about 1000 AD around the St. Lawrence River.

The Spanish arrive in Florida and build a city called St. Augustine.
It’s the oldest permanent European settlement in the United States.

Spain pays for Christopher
Columbus’s trip to India. He found North America, but died
thinking he found a western route to India. That’s why Native
Americans are called INDIANS!

The Europeans brought Africans to America to work as slave
laborers on cotton and tobacco plantations in the South.
The year was
The French came to North America in the early 1600’s. They were
interested in fisheries and the fur trade.
They settled along the St. Lawrence River in present day Canada.

The English made their first permanent settlement in
Jamestown, Virginia
The year was
The Pilgrims arrive at Plymouth, Massachusetts and sign the
Mayflower Compact aboard the Mayflower in 1620. The document
provided for self government that strongly influenced the U.S.
Constitution.

Fighting at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts,
marks the beginning of the American Revolution –
“the shot heard round the world.”
George Washington is appointed the
Commander-in-Chief.
The year was
During the Boston Massacre, British soldiers fired into a crowd of
unarmed colonists, killing ex-slave Crispus Attucks. Attucks was
the first casualty in the cause for American Independence.
The year was
In protest of the recent Tea Acts, Boston civilians dress as Indians to
dump the taxed, and over-priced British tea into Boston harbor.
This came to be known as the Boston Tea Party.

On July 4, America adopted the Declaration of Independence from
England, written by Thomas Jefferson.
The year was
The Constitutional Convention meets to write a Constitution for
the U.S. Most of the great founders of America attended including
George Washington, James Madison, and John Adams. They met
to form a new government that would be strong and, at the same
time, protect the liberties that were fought for in the American
Revolution. The Constitution they created is still the law of the
United States.

The Cherokee Indians living in Georgia were forced, by the state of
Georgia, to leave in 1838. They were sent to Oklahoma.

takes control of the Republic of Texas and of Mexican territories
in the West.
