Terms of the 70’s
• OPEC-Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
• Panama Canal Treaty-one promised an end to U.S. control of the
canal beginning in 2000; Panama was to take over operation and
defense of the canal. The neutrality component of the treaty gave
the U.S. permanent authority to defend the canal if it were placed
under threat as a neutral water passage.
• Presidential Pardon-The action of an executive official of the
government that mitigates or sets aside the punishment for a
crime.
• SALT- Strategic Arms Limitation Talks
• Three Mile Island- An island in the Susquehanna River in southeast
Pennsylvania southeast of Harrisburg. It was the site of a major
nuclear accident on March 28, 1979, when a partial meltdown
released radioactive material and forced the evacuation of
thousands of nearby residents.

• Title IX-Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a US law
enacted on June 23, 1972. In 2002 it was renamed the Patsy T. Mink
Equal Opportunity in Education Act,
• Vietnamization- US government policy of transferring the tasks of
fighting and directing the war to the government and forces of
South Vietnam
• War Powers Act- was a United States Congress joint resolution
providing that the President can send US Armed Forces into action
abroad only by authorization of Congress or if the US is already
under attack or serious threat.
• Vietnam Conflict- A protracted military conflict (1954-1975)
between the Communist forces of North Vietnam supported by
China and the Soviet Union and the non-Communist forces of South
Vietnam supported by the United States.

OSHA- the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970 made to "assure safe
and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and
enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and
assistance".

EPA- United States Environmental Protection Agency created for
the purpose of protecting human health and the environment by
writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by
Congress.
• NOAA- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is a scientific
agency within the United States Department of Commerce focused on the
conditions of the oceans and the atmosphere. NOAA warns of dangerous
weather, charts seas and skies, guides the use and protection of ocean and
coastal resources, and conducts research to improve understanding and
stewardship of the environment.
