The Articles of Confederation Notes
•The Big Idea: The
Articles of Confederation
provided a framework
for a national govern’t.
Lesson One: The Articles of Confederation
Background:
1. The US declares independence from
England and now has to form a new government.
2. 13 States met to work out a plan for a
new national government which would
be called the Articles of Confederation.
3. The Articles of Confederation was a constitution
written during the American Revolution to
establish the powers of the new national
government. (*ratified in 1781)
Main Idea 1: The American people
examined many ideas about government.
1. English laws that limited the power of
the king were the Magna Carta and the
English Bill of Rights.
2. The Enlightenment was a
philosophical movement that
emphasized the use of reason to
examine old ideas and traditions.

1. Early models of self-government were
town meetings, the Virginia House of
Burgesses, and the Mayflower Compact.

that states the powers and duties of
the government.

states, make coins, borrow money, ask
states for money and soldiers, and make
treaties with other nations.

2. The Second Continental Congress
passed the Articles of Confederation on
November 15, 1777, and sent them to each
state for ratification, or approval.

state ratified the Articles in March 1781.

established the Northwest Territory.
1. Congress passed Land Ordinance of
1785 to raise money to pay debts by
selling public land.
a) Ordinance provided for surveying and
dividing land in the west.

c) Each township was divided into lots for
sale to the public. 36 lots per township,
1 square mile per lot.
d) Saved one lot for a public school in each
town and 4 lots for veterans.

a) Established Northwest Territory and
a system for creating new states. When a
state reached 60,000 people in population,
they could apply for statehood and write a
state constitution.
