Why is Franklin D. Roosevelt an important
historical figure?
The Early Years
• Born in Hyde Park, New
York in 1882
• FDR was an only child
and was born into a
wealthy family.
• He became interested in
public service at an
early age.
• In 1900, he goes to
Harvard College.
After that, he went
to law school at
Columbia University
• In 1905, Franklin
married Eleanor
Roosevelt. She too
was interested in
helping others.
Personal Challenges and Triumphs
• In 1910, Roosevelt ran for the Senate in New
York. His campaign paid off as he won the
election.
• In 1913, Woodrow Wilson asked FDR to be
Assistant Secretary of the Navy.
• In 1921, Roosevelt contracted polio. The
disease caused him to be disabled.
• To overcome his
polio and continue
helping others,
Roosevelt exercised
diligently.
• In 1924, Roosevelt
began visiting Warm
Springs, GA to help
his legs to be
stronger.
• In 1928, Roosevelt ran for governor of New
York. He won the election and became
governor in 1929.
• Also in 1929, the Great Depression began.
People lost their homes and jobs; some people
struggled to have food to eat.
• Roosevelt felt it was his duty to help. As
governor, he helped to create jobs for many
people, as well as provide them with food and
shelter.

• Roosevelt ran for
President in 1932,
promising help to all
those affected by the
Great Depression.
• Roosevelt outdid his
opponent, winning the
election and becoming
President in 1933.
• Because of the polio
disease, Roosevelt
used the radio to
communicate with
people. These were
called “fireside chats.”
• He encouraged people
to be brave and
hopeful during the
Depression.
New Deal
• As promised,
Roosevelt and the rest
of the government
started programs that
created jobs for many
Americans.
• He and those that
helped him had to
cooperate for the
good of the United
States.
World War II
• Roosevelt was reelected in 1936.
• In 1939, Great Britain and France were at
war with the dictators of Japan, Germany,
and Italy.
• The United States chose to stay out of it.
• Roosevelt was reelected
again in 1940.
• At this time, he felt
that the U.S. should
help Great Britain and
France fight for
democracy.
• When Japan attacked
Pearl Harbor in 1941,
the U.S. entered the
war.
• As the U.S. struggled
through WWII,
Roosevelt was
reelected yet again in
1944 to a fourth term
as President.
• Right before the end
of the war, Roosevelt
died and Harry
Truman became
President.
Roosevelt’s Legacy
• Roosevelt helped
people in many ways in
his 12 years of being
President.
• Many of his ideas are
still in place today. He
continues to positively
influence the citizens
of the United States.
