History and Government of the US
• Objective- explain how the United States
was formed and describe the growth of the
US through migration and industrialization
– Question- What factors helped shape the
nation? (What are some reasons or
influences as to why the US is the way it is
today?)
• Migration- movement of people within the United States (people
have always been moving to the United States/Immigrants and
within the United States/Emigrants)
– Spain (1st country to arrive in US)
– France, England- settled shortly after
– Columbian Exchange- movement of goods (food, slaves,
animals) across the Atlantic
• How did this exchange help Europeans and hurt Native Americans?
• Industrial and Urban Society
– Late 1800’s Americans moved to
• West- free, open land for farming (1890 17 million people
that live west of Miss. R.)
– What problem will be created when Americans move West?
– Problem – Native Americans were forced off land
• Northeast (New York, Boston, Phil.) and Midwest
Chicago, St. Louis) Cities
– Industrialization- poor immigrants moved to cities
looking for jobs in newly created factories
» Why did poor immigrants move to cities and work in
low pay demanding jobs and not move West?
• World Power and Domestic Changes
– Isolationism- US stayed out of international affairs till WWII
• What factors do you think allowed the US to stay out of
foreign affairs?
– Superpower- after WWII US began to get involved in affairs
of other nations, untouched by war (large military and
economy)
• Should America play a large role in world affairs? How can America
help the world? How do we hurt the world?
• Changing Economy- after WWII
– Suburbs- people move to communities outside of cites in the West
(CA, AZ) and South
• What are some cities that you feel grow enormously after WWII in the West or
South?
• Why do you feel people moved there?
– Social Unrest- Americans begin protesting for change in 1960’s/70’s
for rights that had been keep from Americans for generations
• Who are some groups of Americans who demanded equal rights in the 60’s?
– Transformation- US used to manufacture goods, changes to
• Service Sector- US economy today based on providing services
and information in exchange for money
– What skills are necessary to be successful today? How are these skills
different from a factory worker?
Representative Government- US has a federal (national)
government where people elect representatives to make laws for
the country
• Checks and Balances- 3
braches of gevernment to
ensure one group does not take
absolute power
• Legislative Branch (House of
Representatives and Senate)
– Make laws
– Control $
• Executive Branch
– Enforce laws
– Commander in Chief
– Veto power
• Judicial Branch
– Make sure laws are
fair
– *Who has the most power?
• Assignment- create a timeline with your
group based on a certain period and
identify and explain four major events in
US History based on your section of the
book
– Identify the event, year, define the event, AND
– Explain how that event relates to your topic
• *each person should explain one event, if you are
not explaining an event, you can write on the
timeline
• *Students- write down 2 major events on your
guided reading sheet
