• Since 1790 American merchants stopped in Hawaii on
their way to China and East India
• In the 1820s, Yankee missionaries founded Christian
schools and churches
• The children and grandchildren of the Yankee
missionaries became sugar planters in Hawaii and
sold their crops to the United States
Hawaii’s Economy
By the mid 1800s, 75% of wealth came from
sugar plantations
The Sugar Plantations were owned by
Americans
The labor working on the plantations were
imported from Japan, China, and Portugal
By 1900, foreigners and immigrant laborers
outnumbered native Hawaiians 3 to 1
Hawaii’s Economy
1875 no duty on Hawaiian sugar, no added fee
to sell/buy the sugar in America
This created a huge economic boom over the
next 15 years, and Hawaiian sugar cane
production increased 9 times
White planters profited big time from their
close ties back in the United States
Hawaii’s Economy
1887 The King of Hawaii was forced by wealthy white
businessmen to grant voting rights to only wealthy landowners
1887 U.S. gained rights to Pearl Harbor, the best port in
Hawaii, and the U.S. set up a military base there to be used as a
refueling station for American ships
1890 McKinley Tariff eliminated the duty-free status of
Hawaiian sugar thus Hawaiian sugar had to compete with other
sugar growers, especially Cuba and other Caribbean islands
American planters called for the United States to annex Hawaii
so Hawaiian sugar would become duty-free again but President
Cleveland said no

Hawaii, helping setup a new government
President Cleveland directed those who revolted to
