Aim: Why did a “Cold War” begin following WWII?
Do Now: Copy the domain-specific vocabulary:
1. Cold War - conflict between USA and USSR in which neither nation directly
confronted the other on the battlefield.
2. Yalta Conference – FDR, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin met in the Soviet
Union. They agreed to divide up Germany.
3. Potsdam Conference - Harry Truman, Churchill, and Stalin met to determine
the fate of Eastern Europe. Germany was divided into 4 zones.
4. United Nations - organization located in NYC intended to promote world
peace.
5. Marshall Plan - U.S. Secretary of State George Marshall gave money to
European countries who needed to rebuild after WWII (to stop the spread of
Communism)
6. Warsaw Pact – a military alliance between seven Eastern European nations.
Soviet Union was a member.
7. NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization – 12 countries pledged military
support to one another in case of attack. United States was a member.

After WWII, the only two nations that had
the resources to be called “superpowers”
were the Soviet Union (USSR) and the
United States of America (USA).
