British
The events that led to the massacre are pretty strait
forward; while some British soldiers were patrolling,
several colonists started to taunt and throw
snowballs at them. The British opened fire and killed
not only some taunting colonists, but an innocent
bystander, named Crispus Attucks.
When the British marched to Lexington to take
gunpowder back from the colonists, the colonists
were waiting for them to strike. The orders were to
not fire unless fired upon. But then, a mysterious
gunshot was heard, and the colonists rushed out of
hiding, only to be beaten by the British.
When the British reached Concord, they were dismayed
to find that the gunpowder that was stolen had been
moved. Minutes later, the nearby houses were burned
to the ground by The British. As they moved on, they
were attacked by the colonists and driven out of
Concord.
On the night of June 16th General Putnam led a few
hundred men up Breeds Hill and made a fort. The
General Howe saw the fort and took 2,000 men and
marched them up to take control of the hill. They
fought until the Americans finally ran out of
gunpowder.
Common Sense was a pamphlet that was written by
Thomas Paine. He wrote this pamphlet to inform
colonists that it was not right to live under British
rule.
On December 25,1776 Washington’s army marched
through the night to Trenton so they could surprise
the Hessians. The Hessians had just finished there
Christmas feast when Washington's army arrived
they took 868 prisoners without losing a man.
Washington learned that he was receiving 3,000
French troops in 29 warships. He used the arriving
troops and warships to surround Yorktown on land
and in the port. When Washington opened fire on
Yorktown the British General hoped he would be
rescued by the British navy. When the navy did not
save him he was forced to surrender.
In early 1783, both the Americans and the British
signed a peace treaty in Paris. The treaty stated that
Britain had to recognize the United States as an
independent country, That Britain gave up all land
between the Atlantic Coast and the Mississippi River,
and from Canada south to Florida. The Patriots also
had to return any property taken from Loyalists
during the war.
