The Hmong are
mainly from the
highland
(mountainous)
areas of Laos.
Vietnam War – 1955-1975
•
The Vietnam War spread to
Laos in the 1960’s.
•The United States recruited
the Hmong to fight against
communism.
•The Hmong fought on the
side of the United States.
Hmong’s Brave Role in Vietnam
Hmong soldiers, totaling over
30,000 men fought:
•Ground war
•Flew combat missions
•Directed air strikes
•Rescued downed American flyers
•Fought behind enemy lines
•Gathered intelligence on the
movements of North Vietnamese
troops and more.
Hmong Causalities
• They suffered heavy casualties for their brave involvement in the war
• Hmong soldiers died at a rate ten times as high as that of American
soldiers in Vietnam.
Aftermath of the Vietnam War
•Laos fell to communism.
•Since the Hmong helped fight
against the communist
forces, they were killed for
their role in the war.
•The Hmong become enemies
of their own country.
Resettling in America
• Many Hmong fled to Thailand to refugee camps starting in 1975.
• They resettled in the United States beginning in December of 1975.
