1492 - 2008
1492
Christopher
Columbus
claimed the
island for
Spain. He
established the
first Spanish
settlement in
the Americans.
1500`s
Indians had all died
out from disease.
1697
France gained control
of the western third
of Hispaniola.
1791
In 1791 Toussaint
L`Ouverture, a
soldier freed slaves
from the French.
1802
1802 the French sent there
troops to get the slaves
back.
1804
One of the former
slaves fought to
restore the Indian
name of Haiti, he
declared
independence from
French.
1844
Jean Pierre Boyer,
who ruled until he
die.
1900`s
The country was
disorganized and went
Bankrupt.
1915
The United States sent
marines to Haiti.
1934
U.S. military stayed
there until 1934.
Education,finances,sa
nitation, etc. were
improved.
1957
Francois Duvalier
was elected
president and used
violence of Haiti for
life.
1964
A new constitution
made Duvalier
become president
for life.
1971
Several
unsuccessful
attempts made to
overthrow him.
1986

Haiti was free from
torture after the
president fled the
country from the
protesters.
New constitution
approved, but
the election for
president was
canceled.
1988
New elections
were held in 1988,
Leslie Manigat.
1990
Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a
Catholic priest, was elected
president.
1991
Aristide, was ousted
by the army.
1994
The threat of the
invasion forced the
military to back
down.

came back, to vote

A rebel army sought
to oust Aristide. He
resigned on February
29 calming that the

Earthquakes
*In 2010, in earthquake hit Haiti leaving
300,000 injured; 316,000 people died , and
left 1,000,000 people homeless.
* This put even greater stress on the
people of Haiti

2008: Four storms--Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike--dumped
heavy rains on the impoverished nation.
Haiti suffered 793 killed, with 310 missing and another 593
injured.
The hurricanes destroyed 22,702 homes and damaged another
84,625.
About 800,000 people were affected--8% of Haiti's total
population.
The flood wiped out 70% of Haiti's crops, resulting in dozens of
deaths of children due to malnutrition in the months following
the storms.
Damage was estimated at over $1 billion, the costliest natural
disaster in Haitian history.
