Treaty of 1851
• Between: United States treaty commissioners and American Indian Tribes.
• Tribes: Cheyenne, Sioux, Arapaho, Navajo Crow, Shoshone, Assiniboine,
Mandan, Hidasta and Arikara
• Background:
Sioux- a large powerful tribe that lived
near Mississippi River
Cheyenne- lived in North Dakota
Treaty of 1868
• Between: The United States and Native American tribes.
• Tribes: Comanche, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Arapho and other southern plain
tribes.
• Background:
- Signed by the us and all of the tribes

Medicine Lodge treaty – very similar to the treaty of fort Laramie.
Treaty of 1851
-Signed to give land to the tribes
-Make peace between the Indians and the white
settlers
Treaty of 1868

• Promised land to the Indians
• Black Hills
Results of 1851 and 1868
1851: The Treaty of 1851 failed because neither
side had the power to keep the agreement.
1868: Lakota War begins over the violation of
the Fort Laramie Treaty .
