BENCHMARK REVIEW
As a system I am responsible for
breaking down large food molecules
into smaller nutrients the body can
use.
DIGESTIVE
I add surface area to the small
intestine to slow down the food’s
passage and to absorb nutrients.
VILLI
All living things need these
compounds. My family includes:
amino acids, carbohydrates, proteins
and lipids.
ORGANIC
As a system I an responsible for
moving materials through out
your body.
CIRCULATORY
My salivary glands secrete saliva
which begins ________ digestion of
starches into sugars.
CHEMICAL
My process produces a clone and
requires only 1 parent for
reproduction (1 word)
ASEXUAL
Although I am teeth I act like a
simple machine (wedge) and
perform _________ digestion on
your food.
MECHANICAL
As a system I am responsible for
exchanging oxygen and carbon
dioxide gasses.
RESPIRATORY
I have 3 parts and disproved the
idea of spontaneous generation.
(2 WORDS)
CELL THEORY
I am the elastic structure in your
lungs where gas exchange takes
place
ALVEOLI
All my kids are the same, some
use the term clone, but I prefer:
UNIFORM
I am the basic unit of life.
CELL
Cellular ___________ takes place in
the mitochondria of all cells. The
result is ATP an energy molecule.
RESPIRATION
As I increase so does the health and
sustainability of my ecosystem.
BIODIVERSITY
I have to play second banana to the
nervous system, but at least I get to
help control and coordinate your
body.
ENDOCRINE
I help with the mechanical digestion
of lipids and am produced by the
liver.
BILE
I am semi-permeable and referred
to as the gate keeper if you do not
know the “password” you are not
getting in or out. (2 words)
CELL
MEMBRANE
As a species I am not to blame if I
edge out native species and
decrease your biodiversity. You have
tagged me as an _________ species
INVASIVE
Not all producers are plants
that’s why we prefer the term:
AUTOTROPH
I capture the sun’s radiant energy
and transform it into chemical
energy.
CHOLORPLAST
I am a genius and in command of
my SMALL world
NUCLEUS
By using this method of
reproduction we guarantee a
greater mix of genetic material and a
greater biodiversity.
SEXUAL
All ecosystems want to continue
indefinitely so we do all we can to
maintain our:
SUSTAINABILITY
Our offspring are not uniform
they are very…..
DIVERSE
I am the process that takes in
sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide
to produce glucose and oxygen.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Plant cells like my rigidity because I
provide them with structure and
support
CELL WALL
Accomplishment means you have
applied a force and moved an object
some distance. I am calculated by
multiplying: F x D
WORK
If you have one or more of me, I can
increase your chance of survival.
ADAPTATION
My largest organ is the skin and I act
as a barrier to protect the body. I am
the __________ system.
INTEGUMENTARY
Although I am part of the digestive
system no digestion takes place,
only absorption of water and
dissolved nutrients.
LARGE INTESTINE
I am defined as a push or a pull
FORCE
Who am I?
I am found in the nucleus and carry hereditary
information from one generation to the next in
the form of genes.
CHROMOSOMES
I store all the data that codes for
who you are and how you work. I
am located in the chromosomes.
DNA
I am a special key that can not open
any locks but I can help you identify
an organism.
DICHOTOMOUS
I am a plant’s circulatory system
responsible for transporting
necessary materials through the
plant.
XYLEM
My job is to filter blood to
remove waste.
KIDNEY
I am the unit of measurement for
work.
JOULE
Which one takes more work?
Pushing a box up a ramp into a moving truck or
bringing each box up without the ramp?
They both use the same amount of
work except the distance is increased
over a greater distance by using the
ramp which makes it feel like the work
is easier.
When is work performed?
If you are pushing a car and the car does not
move are you still doing work if your muscles are
aching and you are sweating and tired?
No, you are not because the car
has not moved. If it does not move
in the direction of the force, then
no work is performed.
Although I am small I have a critical
job. I produce proteins for you.
RIBOSOMES
Without my wave like contractions
food could not move through your
digestive system.
PERISTALSIS
My system’s main go to worker is
the kidney, without me you would
become very toxic.
EXCRETORY
I am responsible for producing
ATP during cellular respiration.
MITOCHONDRIA
Omnivore, Carnivore, Herbivore
we are all a type of…..
HETEROTROPH
Please keep me watered properly so
that my vacuoles will stay full and
maintain __________ pressure so I
do not wilt.
TURGOR
• Review the levels of organization. What is the
smallest example. (Remember that cells have
special names when they have a special
function, i.e., neuron
• Cells -> Tissue -> Organ -> Organ System ->
Organism
Photosynthesis
• Radiant energy (sunlight/visible light) is
trapped by chloroplast and converted by
chlorophyll into chemical energy in the form
of glucose (sugar)
Food Chain
• Identify the producers and first and second
level consumers in this food chain
Energy in a Food Chain
• What happens to energy as it passes through
a food chain?
Energy Pyramid
What do the arrows in a food web show?
Key Concepts
• Key Concept 1: Compounds contain
carbon are called organic compounds.
• Key Concept 2: Many organic
compounds often contain hydrogen,
oxygen, phosphorus, nitrogen and sulfur,
in addition to carbon.
• Key Concept 3: All living things are made
up of organic compounds.
Stimulus
• A change in an organism’s surroundings that
causes the organism to react
Response
• An action or change in behavior that occurs as
the result of a stimulus
Cell Theory
• What are the three parts to the cell theory?
• All living things are made of cells
• All cells come from pre-existing cells
• Cells are the basic structure and function of
living things.
• Evidence of cell theory?? Give examples
• What drives biodiversity (what at the cellular
level causes it?)
• The sustainability (the quality of not being harmful to the
environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting longterm ecological balance of species)
ecosystem.
• Genetic code- DNA
of a species in an
• How are managed areas such as tree farms
and fisheries different in regards to
biodiversity than a comparable natural area?
• Is there greater biodiversity, less, or the same?
• View the pictures on the next slide and write
your answer
