The Circulatory System
What is its function?
To carry blood throughout the body
What is in the blood:
oxygen
carbon dioxide
glucose
hormones
antibodies
Types of Systems
Open Systems
blood is pumped into
body cavities and cells
exchange blood
products via diffusion
very inefficient
snails, sponges, insects
blood = hemolymph
Type of Systems
Closed System
very efficient
blood is transported to
every cell in the
organisms body via
blood vessels
Organs of a Closed
System
Arteries - carry blood
away from the heart
rigid muscular walls
similar to a garden hose
Other Vessels
Veins
carry blood back to the
heart.
stretchy thin walls
valves
The Pump
The heart is actually a
double pump for it
pumps to two locations
the lungs
the body
The route of blood
The heart pumps
blood to both the lungs
and the body
simultaneously
