Introduction to Circulation
The circulatory system is made up of 5
major parts:
•
•
•
•
•
Heart: acts as a pump
Arteries: carry blood to the tissues
Veins: carry blood back to the heart
Capillaries: connect arteries to veins
Blood: fluid that fills the vessels
Circulation Continued…
• The Heart
- the human heart has 4 chambers… 2 atria that
receive blood and 2 ventricles that pump blood
out
- the heart is split into two halves (left and right)
each with an atrium and a ventricle
- blood comes to the heart from the body
through the veins. The veins merge to form the
Vena Cava (superior from the head, inferior from
the body)
Circulation Continued…
- The blood from the vena cava enters the
heart through the right atrium
- it then passes to the right ventricle
through the right atrio-ventricular (av)
valve
- it is then pumped out through the
pulmonary artery to the lungs
Circulation Continued
- the lungs recharge the blood with oxygen
-the blood then returns to the heart
through the pulmonary vein (the only vein
in the body containing oxygenated blood)
- it then enters the left atrium, through the
left av valve to the left ventricle
- from the left ventricle, it moves into the
aorta (biggest artery in the body)
Circulation Continued…
- the aorta then branches into many major
arteries named according to where in the
body they are found:
Carotid Artery:
to head
Brachial Arteries: to arms
Femoral Arteries: to legs
Renal Arteries:
to kidneys
Hepatic Artery:
to liver
