Circulatory System
• Pulmonary
Circulation
–Carries blood between
the heart and the
lungs only
• Systemic Circulation
–Carries blood between
the heart and the rest
of the body, except for
the lungs

Blood Vessels
• Arteries: carry O2- & nutrient-rich
blood away from the heart to body
(arterials-small arteries)
• Veins: carry CO2- & waste rich blood
back from body towards the heart
(venules-small veins)
• Capillaries: where nutrients, gases, &
wastes are exchanged with the body;
located b/w arteries & veins

Blood’s Role
• Transports raw materials (from
digestion) to the cells
• Removes waste from cells
–Brings wastes to kidneys, lungs, & skin
• Maintains a fluid environment for the
cells
• Protects the body from disease
• Keeps body pH stable
• Prevents further blood loss
Blood Composition
Blood Composition
• Erythrocytes: RBC’s; carry
Oxygen/Carbon Dioxide using hemoglobin
(~45% of blood) (circulate up to 120 days)
• Leucocytes: WBC’s; body defense (<1%
of blood) (circulate under 1 day)
• Platelets: involved in clotting (<1% of
blood) (circulate 3-8 days)
• Plasma: liquid where gases/nutrients are
dissolved (~55% of blood)

Lymphatic System
• All of our cells are bathed by fluids
that diffuse out of the capillaries
• This system collects these fluids and
proteins and returns them to the blood
• Lymph nodes return fluids & proteins
to the blood, plus have WBC’s to help
protect the body from disease or
cancer-causing cells
