Circulatory System
System that
transports
materials
around the
body.
There are two sides of
each heart, a right side
and a left side.
•Each side has two
chambers:
•ATRIUM (Blood
enters)
•VENTRICLE
(blood leaves)

Ventricle
The Right Side
Comes
from
body, goes to
lungs
Blood with little
O2 and much
CO2
The left side
Blood
comes
from lungs
and goes to
body
Carries less
CO2 and more
O2
Each chamber
contains VALVES.
Keep
blood from
flowing backwards
Between atria and
ventricles
Between ventricles
and arteries
When
the left
and the right
side work
together, it
forms a
continuous
cycle of blood!
Fast Fact!
The
average heart contracts 72
times a minute, moving 70 ml each
contraction.
This means the average heart
pumps enough blood in 1 year to
fill an Olympic size swimming
pool!
Your heart has been
beating since before you
were born and will beat
until the day you die.

The heartbeat is
controlled by
electricity from the
nervous system
and hormones
from the endocrine
system.

Blood Vessels are
...tubes that
carry blood
throughout the
body. Blood
does not leave
the vessels.
Types of Blood Vessels
Arteries- carries blood
away from heart. Thick
walls and have a pulse.
Veins- brings blood
back to heart. Thin
walls, but have oneway valves.
Blood Vessel Types(cont.)
Capillaries- very small,
thin blood vessels.
Oxygen, food, wastes,
and other substances
pass in and out of the
capillaries. Every cell in
your body touches a
capillary!
Arteries..flow into capillaries..flow into veins
Fast Fact!
5 liters of
blood
continually
pump around
the 60,000
miles of
blood vessels
in your body!
Blood, the fluid of life
is really....
... a clear yellowish liquid with
red particles floating in it!
If you spin a test tube of blood enough, it will
separate into parts!
Parts of Blood
Plasma- clear
liquid part of
blood. 55% of
blood. Carries
water, food,
wastes, salt, and
chemicals.
Plasma
Parts of Blood
Red Blood Cellscarry O2 and CO2. 43%
of blood. contains
hemoglobin- a protein
with iron that carries
the O2 and CO2.
Red
Blood
Cells
FAST FACT!
One
milliliter of blood contains
about 5 million red blood cells!
Parts of Blood
White Blood Cellsfight infections. 1%
of blood. larger
cells.
Platelets- start
blood clotting. 1%
of blood.
FAST FACT!
White
blood cells have a life
span of a few days to a few
months, and are
outnumbered by RBC’s 700
to 1!
