What are Platyhelminthes?




Platyhelminthes are flatworms.
They are invertebrates.
They are a few millimeters thick.
They are also soft.
Symmetry

Their symmetry is
bilateral.
Here is a Marine flatworm.
Movement && Support

Their movement is a cilia which helps
them glide on their epidermal cells.
Body Plan


They are soft.
They are flattened worms that have
tissues and internal organs.
Feeding && Digestion


They are carnivores and scavengers.
They digest food through diffusion
Respiration

Flatworms have no
respiratory organs.

Examples: no heart,
blood vessels, no
gills, etc.
This is one of the many ways that flatworms look.
Circulation

Flatworms do not need a circulatory
system.
Excretion


Flame Cells - specialized cells that
filter && remove excess water from the
body.
Flame cells function in excretion.
Response
(Nervous System)

The Nervous System allows the
eyespot to gather food && find dark
places to hide.
Asexual Reproduction


Asexual reproduction is common in
free-living flatworms, it takes place in
fission.
The organism splits in to two, each half
grows new parts to form a new
organism.
Sexual Reproduction


They are
hermaphrodites.
They deliver sperm
to each other &&
the eggs are laid in
clusters. They
hatch within weeks.
Here is a picture of a laid egg.
Subphylums/ Classes

They are
turbllarians, flukes,
and tapeworms.
Here is a picture of a Fluke.
Platyhelminthes Turbllarians


Free-living flatworms.
Most live in marine or fresh water.
Platyhelminthes Trematoda


Also known as Flukes.
Paratactic flatworms.
Playhelminthes Cestoda


Also known as Tapeworms.
Can get into humans.
Plathelminthes Monogenea

Mostly on fish gills.
