Circulatory System
Functions:
Carries oxygen and
nutrients to organs
and tissues
Transports away
carbon dioxide and
other waste products
Regulates body
temperature
Components:
a. Heart 4 chambers:
left and right
atria, left and
right ventricles
Components:
b. Blood
Red blood cells (rbc):
oxygen rich
White blood cells (wbc):
disease fighting cells
Platelets: blood clotting
Plasma: a yellowish
liquid that contains
platelets, rbc, wbc, waste
products and other
substances
Components:
c. Blood vessels
Arteries: carry blood
away from heart; have
thick walls to withstand
pressure from the heart
Veins: carry blood
towards heart; have
one-way valves to
prevent blood from
flowing back
Components:
c. Blood vessels
Capillaries: link arteries and veins; thin
enough to allow diffusion of oxygen and
nutrient; 10 vessels side by side equal the
size of a human hair
Cardiovascular Diseases:
a. Atherosclerosis
– plaque in the
artery walls
reduces blood flow;
caused by high
cholesterol
Cardiovascular Diseases:
b. Hypertension- elevated
blood pressure resulting
from an increase in the
amount of blood or due
to blood pushing through
narrow openings; after
some time heart thickens
Cardiovascular Diseases:
c.Arteriosclerosishardening of the
arteries; loss of
arterial elasticity;
impairs circulation;
heart has to work
harder to deliver
blood
