Go With The Flow – The Heart
Blood
Components of Blood

Blood is actually made
up of several things.




Red Blood Cells
White Blood Cells
Plasma
Platelets
Your Blood is made of


Red Blood Cells
Plasma
 Liquid part of blood
 Pale yellow mixture of
water, proteins and
salts
Red Blood Cell
 They carry oxygen to all
parts of the body.
 Remove Carbon
Dioxide.
 Remove other wastes.
White Blood Cells

White Blood Cells
 Fight and kill germs
that may enter your
bloodstream
White Blood Cells act as cops
patrolling the bloodstream
White blood cell attacking an infection
Platelets
A large scab

Platelets surrounding a Red Blood Cell.
Platelets
 Form “scabs” when you cut yourself
 Helps stop the bleeding
Blood Types
Not all blood is the
same.
 Structures on the surface
of blood can differ
because of your genetic
makeup.
 Currently Scientists have
grouped these structures
into 8 different blood
types.


Blood Transfusions
Blood Transfusion
Recent research suggests that this blood compatibility
chart may change in the future as our understanding of
blood improves.
Blood Incompatibility
When incompatibility blood mixes it clumps together, this can be fatal!
Blood Vessels
3 Major Parts of the Circulatory system

Blood Vessels – routes for blood
to travel

Heart – pumps or pushes blood
through body

Blood – carries oxygen and
nutrients through the body
Blood Vessels - Overview
Your body resembles a large
roadmap, There are “routes”
or Blood vessels that take you
blood to the heart and the
rest of your body.
 There are 3 types of blood
vessels:




Arteries
Capillaries
Veins
Blood Vessels - Detail

Arteries: The largest and thickest of
the blood vessels.


Capillaries: the smallest blood
vessels.



Carry blood away from the heart to all
the cells in the body.
The exchange of oxygen and carbon
dioxide take place in capillaries.
Bring blood to all tissue in the body.
Veins: Carry blood back to the heart.
Clogged Blood Vessels
If you eat too much
fatty foods this is
what happens to
your blood vessels!
Fat deposits in a blood vessel.

Heart Attack
When the blood vessels of the heart are blocked
it can cause a heart attack!
Causes of blocked blood vessels



Obesity



High blood cholesterol
(too much fat)
Smoking
Physical activity
Obesity
Diabetes
Stress and anger
The Heart
The Heart
The heart is a vital organ
that basically serves as a
pump.
 The heart pumps blood
around the body.
 To do this the heart is
made up of a special kind
of muscle tissue.
 This muscle tissue allows
the heart to beat
constantly.

Blood Flow - Basic
Blood Flow – Advanced

Order of blood flow
Without oxygen - veins
With oxygen - arteries
