• Hypocapnia - CO2 in blood
– Can be caused by hyperventilation

• A flap of cartilage at the upper part of
larynx - projects into pharynx
• During swallowing, whole larynx rises to
epiglottis, blocking connection to
respiratory tract
• Once food is in esophagus, larynx relaxes
and returns to normal location
