Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry
• OCB collaboratory
one year proposal funded by NSF in May 2005
• PIs: Dave Glover, Ken Buesseler, Scott Doney
• original proposal was entitled “Coordination and Data
Management for Ocean Carbon Cycle Research
» data management support for targeted programs to improve
accessibility to ocean biogeochemistry data
» scientific workshop on recent advances and future
opportunities (held at WHOI, August, 2005)
» name changed from OCCC/OCCR to OC&B in June 2005
and to OCB in January 2006, then back to OC&B Oct 2006

VERTIGO and OCB
• VERTIGO is one of five participating
programs in the OCB collaboratory
• CARIACO time-series, EDDIES, MedFlux,
and SOFeX
• each independent project was collecting
biogeochemistry data and each had an
aspect we found ‘intriguing’
» OCB is itself a research project
» how difficult would it be to take data from several different
projects at various stages in their life cycle and create a
relational database

BCO DMO
Biological and Chemical Oceanography
Data Management Office
• NSF funded project
PIs: Peter Wiebe and David Glover
• 3 year project (start: 1 Oct 2006)
• data management for biological and
chemical oceanography
• continued data management support for
original OCB projects

JGOFS Database Engine
distributed, object-oriented, relational database management system
query
original data can be in any format
system uses methods to locate and translate the data objects

OCB-VERTIGO database status
• cruise event logs and basic
hydrographic data done first
• working on bottle summary files now
• questions referred to VERTIGO project
office

What can you do ?
• contribute data to VERTIGO project office
• metadata metadata metadata
» spatial and temporal
» methodology (acquisition and processing)
» quality control procedures
» any publications associated with the data
• use the database, provide feedback

What next ?
• continued ingestion of VERTIGO data
into online OCB database
• synthesis of data from Niskin bottle samples
Niskin bottle summary data product
(e.g. full cruise merged Niskin bottle data)
• BCO DMO funding will support development
of an enhanced data system interface
(data discovery: map and improved search)
