The Respiratory
System
By Kaitlyn Browne, Ariel

and Cordel August
What does the Respiratory System do?
The Respiratory system takes
carbon dioxide in the blood and
exchanges it for oxygen. Some
animals use it for communication.
How does the Respiratory system Function?
Respiration happens when oxygen is
taken into the body, exchanged in
the blood for carbon dioxide, and
carbon dioxide is let out of the body.
Porifera (Sponges)



Sponges do not have specialized tissue
Sponges siphon in water and filter out nutrients
and oxygen in the water
Sponges then excrete waste though the water
that moves out of them
Mollusca (Mollusks)
Mollusks get oxygen through external
openings that connect to a single lung or
gills
 The gills are called “ctenidia”
 The openings are called “pneumostome”

ARTHROPODA (INSECTA)
Air enters through openings called
spiracles and into the tracheal trunk
 A series of internal sacs or tubes (tracheal
tubes) diffuse or pump oxygen directly
into the body tissue

ARTHROPODA (ARACHNIDA)
Oxygen is taken in by book lungs or a
tracheal system
 Book lungs consist of leaf-like structures
stacked like pages
 Tracheal systems diffuse air into organs
through fluid filled tubes

ECHINODERMATA
Gas exchange occurs by diffusion of
gasses in the water vascular system
 Special thin patches of skin act as gills

CHORDATA (Fish)



Water enters through the gills and the gills filter
out the oxygen
oxygen is transported to the rest of the body
Gills have a large surface area for maximum
oxygen intake
CHORDATA (Reptiles)
All reptiles use lungs for respiration
 Blood vessels carry oxygen to the organs
 Some reptiles can absorb oxygen though
the skin

CHORDATA (Aves)
The lungs of birds are small and connect
to air sacs in the bones
 A one-way flow system so old air cannot
circulate back into the lungs

Interaction
The respiratory system interacts with the
circulatory system because the circulatory
system carries oxygen to the organs and
back to the lungs
 The nervous system regulates breathing in
the respiratory system

Test questions!
1.What is the function of the respiratory
system?
2.Describe the respiratory system in a
human. (You should know, you are a
human!)
3.Give one example of an animal that has
lungs.
Fun Facts!
1.
2.
3.
4.
Without the respiratory system, you
would not exist!
A bird’s respiratory system is more
efficient than a human’s
The most common respiratory system on
the planet is that of the insects, because
they are the most abundant in the animal
kingdom
Most animals have no lungs and use
tubes and diffusion to move air
