Warm Up
Get ready to take quizeverything off desk
Have Notes ready for me to
check (put them under your
desk)
Homework: Short Story (1-2 Pages)
Write a Short Story in which you describe something that you recently learned
The story should focus on how you learned this particular thing
Thesis: Methods and ways of learning what you learned
HINTS:
-Memorization
-Questioning yourself
-Making Up Guidelines
-Watching others
Learning Objectives
-Enhance Quiz-Taking Skills
-Strengthen Public Speaking Skills
-Engage in Visual Learning
Take Quiz
Take Quiz II: Sensation,
Perception, and
Consciousness
Homework Sharing: Recurring Dreams
Finalize posters on your recurring dreams with your group
Be prepared to present your dream to the class
Remember good Public Speaking Skills:
1. Engaging Voice
2. Pace yourself- Not too fast, Not too slow
3. Rehearse what you will be saying
4. Be aware of body movements and posture
5. STAY CHILL
Sleepwalk with Me
While watching the movie,
be sure to answer the
questions as they come up
throughout the movie
Warm Up
What is a Stimulus?
How do our responses to Stimuli
impact how we think and
behave?

Learning Objectives
Analyze Classical and Operant Conditioning
Interpret the role of stimuli, responses, and
reinforcers that are used in Conditioning
Build connections to your life
Conditioning
Conditioning: Learning how to respond to different stimuli
through your past experiences
Conditioned Response: You learn how to respond to
stimuli based on your experiences
Unconditioned Response: Your response to a stimulus is
automatic, not learned
Check for Understanding
What is the difference between a Conditioned
Response and an Unconditioned Response?
Identify three examples of a Conditioned and
Unconditioned Response
Have you experienced Conditioning in your own
life? If so, explain what you learned through your
past experiences
What happens when you see this
stimulus?
What is the Stimulus?
How do you respond to this stimulus?
Is this a Conditioned or Unconditioned Response?

Classical vs. Operant Conditioning
Classical Conditioning: An
unconscious response to learned
experiences
Operant Conditioning: A conscious
response to learned experiences
The Conditioning Experiment
I need one volunteer for each behavior
You will be asked to perform a behavior
We will tell you whether you are hot or cold
in terms of doing the behavior
If you do it correctly, you will get Candy
Behavior 1
Go open the
door
Behavior 2
Touch a desk
Behavior 3
Touch my desk
Behavior 4
Sit on the
ground
Behavior 5
Jump in the Air
Behavior 6
Point to the
homework on the
board
Behavior 7
Stand next to a
poster that you
made
Behavior 8
Grab a Tissue
Check for Understanding
Did we simulate Classical or Operant
Conditioning in this experiment? Why do you
think this?
What examples can you think of for the other
type of Conditioning?
What is the main difference between Classical
and Operant Conditioning?
Pavlov’s Dogs
Read the article about
Pavlov’s Dogs and answer the
questions that follow
Reinforcement
Reinforcement: Process by which the stimulus increases the
chances that the behavior will continue
Positive Reinforcers: Something that a person wants
Negative Reinforcers: Something that person doesn’t want
What examples can you think of when Positive Reinforcers are used
to get someone to do a behavior?
What examples can you think of when Negative Reinforcers are
used to get someone to do a behavior?
The Big Bang Theory

What is the stimulus that she is responding to?
What type of conditioning is this?
How is reinforcement being used in this example?
Is Sheldon using a positive or negative reinforcer?

Warm Up
Identify three Positive and
Negative Reinforcers that
have been used on you?
What did you learn from
these Reinforcers?

Learning Objectives
Analyze the work of B.F. Skinner
Engage in discussion about
ethical considerations in
Conditioning
Synthesize Reinforcement
B.F. Skinner
Read the article on B.F.
Skinner and answer the
questions that follow
Operant Conditioning Discussion
Do any ethical considerations need to be made when
applying Operant Conditioning to humans? Could there
be problems with controlling how people learn? Why or
why not?
Consider the following:
-Politics
-Education
-Social Life
Blood Diamond
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaiKMayEUOw
What type of conditioning is taking place here?
What type of reinforcers are being used? What types of
behaviors are they trying to get the children to do?
What does this tell you about how conditioning on
humans can raise ethical issues?
Reinforcement
Primary Reinforcement: Immediate results of a behavior
Secondary Reinforcement: Results of a behavior that are going to be longer
lasting
Continuous Reinforcement: Every time a reward is given after performing a
behavior
Partial Reinforcement: Sometimes a reward is given after performing a behavior
1. Fixed Interval- Rewards come based on an interval of time, which is fixed
2. Variable Interval- Rewards come at random or can change based on the
behavior
Check for Understanding
1. You play a slot machine in Vegas- What kind of
reinforcement is This?
2. A little child is told that they will get all their dessert if they
eat all their dinner-What kind of reinforcement is this?
3. Parent gives a student a big hug sometimes when they do
well on a test- What kind of reinforcement is this?
4. Dog gets zapped when they pass an electronic dog fenceWhat kind of reinforcement is this?

Transitioning: Learning
What is something that you learned, which you wrote
about for homework, and how did you learn this?
How do you learn best? Why?
What is the connection between learning and
conditioning?
Latent Learning
Draw a map of the classroom
Draw a map of the school
Draw a map of Downtown Brentwood
How do you think you know this
information???
Different types of Learning
Latent Learning: Knowledge that
remains hidden until it is needed
Observational learning: Acquiring
knowledge and skills through observing
and imitating others
Check for Understanding
Was the scene from Blood Diamond an example
of Latent or Observational Learning?
Give one example from your life of Latent Learning

learning is going to take effect when watching
football? How do you think this learning is going to
impact you?
