The Aztec capital was called
Tenochtitlan and was built in
the middle of a lake. Today it is
Mexico City.
The Aztecs lived in Central
Mexico- Valley of Mexico.
They controlled many other tribes,
forced them to give them
money and tribute. Also they
used them as slaves and
human sacrifice.
The Spaniards gave some of the
Aztecs smallpox and they got
brought down.

sometimes gain their freedom.

Cortez
When Cortez entered the Aztec land
they thought he was a pale
skinned god named Quetzalcoatl .
So they welcomed him.
Then Cortez took Montezuma
hostage. When fighting broke out
Montezuma tried to stop it by
speaking to his people. While he
was speaking someone threw a
stone at him and it got stuck in his
head and the injury soon killed
him.
The Aztecs drove away Cortez but
they returned and defeated an the
Aztecs once and for all in 1521.

Pizarro
•
Pizarro the conquistador conquered
the Inca civilization by inviting
Atahualpa after he won the battle for
emperor and took him hostage. The
Incas paid Pizarro thousand of pounds
of gold and silver to free Atahualpa but
Pizarro killed him anyway. Pizarro
also had a advantage over the
Inca because they were having
a civil war because their
emperor died and his sons
were fighting over who got to
be the emperor while Pizarro
was planning his attack. (Civil
War means 2 or more groups
in the same country having a
war.)

Conclusion
• 500 years ago conquistadors
conquered the Aztec and the
Inca. They changed a lot of
Mexico and South America.
For example most of the
people in Mexico and South
America speak Spanish today.
Also most people in Mexico
and South America are
Christian and no longer
worship the Native Gods. Also
most of the Inca, Aztec, and
Maya traditions have
disappeared forever.
