» Maps are human creations based on individual
interpretations of the world.
» As a result, all maps have some degree of bias.
˃ Lack of information.
˃ Lack of scale (too big, too small).
˃ Lack of perception (always centered on one country).
» Maps change based on the interaction between
humans and their world.

WG Lesson 7
Sea of Japan vs. East Sea
The sea between Japan and Korea has long been called the “Sea of
Japan,” but Koreans argue that it should be called the “East Sea” as the
sea does not (and should not) be influenced by Japan.

Name Perspective
Arabian Gulf vs. Persian
Gulf
For centuries, almost all maps labeled the area between the Arabian
Peninsula and Iran as the “Persian Gulf” after the Persian Empire that
once controlled the area. In the 1960’s, nationalistic Arabs began
calling it the “Arabian Gulf.” Today, the two conflict over what it should
be called.
