The Song
The way this song began was because
the Lumbard brothers needed a song for
the rally in Chicago on July 26,1862 so
they turned to George Fredrick Root.
The Song
George Root knew he needed to get to
work, he started working on May 3,
1861. The Lumbard brothers knew they
needed a song to get troops so that’s
what they told him to make it about.
The Song
The song was finished in 1862 and it
was a hit at the rally, Lincoln wanted to
get over 300,000 volunteers for the
Union but they only got 175,000
volunteers because of the song.
The Song
The troops would sing the song while
marching to battle. When the troops
sang the song it would bring hope and
happiness to them. Considered a “rally”
song it was played and sung with gusto
by virtually every Federal regiment brass
band.
The Song
Later in 1895 Root was honored to go to
“War Song Concert” in Chicago by a
standing ovation by Robert Todd
Lincoln. Since the Union song became
so popular the Confederacy wrote their
own Battle Cry of Freedom.
Facts About The Song
The troops thought that it was the most
inspirational song.
The song also has another name for it
called Rally Round The Flag
In the song it says “Up with the stars” it
means to raise the Union flag
In the song it says “Down with the
traitors” means to kill the Confederacy
What it Means
The song was meant to bring in
volunteers to fill in the empty ranks, the
song also means to free the slaves and
get their rights by winning the Civil War.
My Reflection
I think that this song was inspirational to
the troops to keep fighting and always
do your best, I also think that this song
made a big impact on the war because
of what it said in the song made troops
keep fighting.
