First shots fired of the Civil War
Did anyone die?!....sort of.
April 12-14, 1861
BACKGROUND
• South Carolina seceded from the Union on December 20, 1860
• Major Robert Anderson were positioned at Fort Moultrie near Charleston
Harbor
• Troops were moved to Fort Sumter after the secession of South Carolina
• The Union feared violence
• South was angry at this move
• Fort Sumter was well fortified but had lack of food
Major Robert Anderson
• Born in Kentucky on June 14, 1805
• Graduated from West Point in 1825
• Served in the Black Hawk War with Abraham Lincoln
• Supposed to have been super nice
• Was severely wounded in battle, but survived
• Commanded troops in Kentucky after the attack on Fort Sumter
• Married a woman named Eba? Eba? Really?
•
Had two kids. A son and a daughter.
• Was sick for most of his life and retired after the war in Nice, France to
cure his ailments
APRIL 11, 1861
• Confederate General PGT Beauregard was sent to force Major Anderson
to surrender
• Anderson refused
• Both sides were….not happy
• South was super salty that the Union was waving a flag at Fort Sumter
APRIL 12, 1861 4:30am
• Confederates opened fire on Fort Sumter
• Anderson refused to return fire for two hours
• Union Captain Abner Doubleday (second in command) fired in defense of
the Fort
• Bombardment continued all day
THE NEXT DAY
• Firing stopped when Major Anderson surrendered
• The surrender allowed Major Anderson to leave with a 100 gun salute
• It was that salute that killed the only casualty of the Battle of Fort Sumter
