The Civil War

Introduction

The Civil War was one of the most
tragic events in American History. This
unit will provide the students with a
deeper understanding of the events
that led up to the war, the people who
played key roles in the war, and the
effects that the war played on American
society, both then and today.

Activities
The students will mark on a map the
Mason-Dixon Line, the states that made
up the Union and the Confederacy.
 The Students will explore the situations
that led up to the Civil War.
 The students will read Uncle Tom’s
Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.


Upon completion of the book, the
students will write why they think there
was such controversy surrounding it.
 The students will share their opinions to
the class when they have finished
writing it.


The students will research the important
military leaders of the northern states.
The students will research the important
military leaders of the southern states.
The class will split into two groups. One
group will debate for the North and the other
will debate for the South the effectiveness of
their military maneuvers.

Students will research how the slaves fit
into both sides of the war.
 Students will research different ethnic
groups living in the US at the time of
the war and how they contributed to
the war effort.


abolitionists who helped fight slavery.
 The students will research Harriet
Tubman and the Underground Railroad.
 The students will draw a map of the
Underground Railroad.

if they had any relatives that fought in
the Civil War and find out what side
they fought for.
 The students will brainstorm ways that
our nation would be different if the
South had won the war.

Conclusion

After completing the activities in this
unit and having taken a test on the
subject matter, the students will have
gained a deeper understanding of the
Civil War and the toll it took on the
American people.
