Carolina became the first state
to secede.
Soon, Mississippi, Florida,
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana,
and Texas also seceded.
11 states seceded and formed
the Confederate States of
America.
Jefferson Davis became the
president.
They wrote a Constitution
making slavery legal.

America.
The American Civil War was fought to
keep the South from leaving the
Union.
Slavery was the major issue that
separated the North from the South.
South wanted
states’ sovereignty,

paid labor
