Introduction




The Civil War was a dangerous
war, and very scary.
It went for 4 years and it
killed, about 2 million people.
The purpose of the war was to
end slavery and that’s why it’s
important.
The Union and Confederate
was the main purpose of the
war.

Vicksburg was a city that was seat of
Warren County, western Mississippi.
In May and also June of
1863,General Ulysses S. Grant’s
armies approached on Vicksburg,
looking around the city and locating
information about Confederate army
under John Palmerton.
On July 4, Vicksburg gave up after
operations.
That was the highest point of one of
the most interesting military
campaigns of the war.
The Union and
Confederate Armies





In 1861, the North and South weren’t
ready to fight.
They both were in the position where they
had to build strong armies.
Union soldiers wore dark blue jackets,
light blue pants, a blue cap, and black
shoes.
The Confederate soldiers were different,
they wore long gray shirts, light blue
pants, and gray jackets.
The soldiers did improve by working
harder then earlier in the year.
The Battle of Gettysburg





During the first two wars, the
Confederacy won many battles in the
East, and all these victories kept the
Union army from capturing the
Confederate capital at Richmond,
Virginia.
On July 1, a group of Confederate
soldiers entered the town of
Gettysburg, looking for a supply of
shoes.
To their surprise, Union soldiers were
also in town.
When fighting broke out, both armies
rushed to Gettysburg. The battle was
about a turning point of the war.
As it comes, the Confederacy never
again once again invaded the North.
Military Tactics and
Technology






The technology and tactics were help
to the soldiers fighting in wars.
The new tactics and technology help
soldiers fight, defend, and win wars.
The rifles were more accurate from
greater distances than the old
muskets.
The new guns changed the tactics of
war.
The defenders couldn’t defend their
self as they got close.
Then, they can use the cannons,
called artillery, to shoot their prey .
Combat Conditions






Civil War combat was a nightmare on so many
levels, that you can’t imagine.
Attacks on enemy positions usually started with
fence artillery shelling that filled the air with
deafening noise and clouds of stinging, black
smoke.
Bullets and artillery shells tore into the attackers,
ripping off arms, legs, and heads.
When battles ended, thousands of soldiers on
both sides laid dead.
Wounded men cried out in thirst and pain.
Many of soldiers died before they can get help.
Medical Care





The South had a few tools to use
The North had more tools to use to cure
the men than the South did.
If men had to cut of some parts of their
body so the wound or disease won’t
spread.
But, the doctors can’t always cure the
problem.
The North and South tried to ease the
suffering.
Food and Drink




Berries


Coffee
Some food caused heath problems and
made the soldiers unhappy on both
sides.
Soldiers had to carry food that won’t
spoil fast.
Ate beef and pork that was pickled in
salt water.
It would get so salty that the soldiers
had to boil it in water for a very long Blue Berries
time.
Usually drank coffee.
Would pick berries.
Conditions on the Home
Front




Women had to do everything since the
men were gone.
All families were worried and loosing
money.
Men in the front lines were more likely
to get shoot.
Many people were unhappy with the
hardships.
From Gettysburg to
Appomattox.






The Union also had won an important
victory in the West.
Soldiers under General Ulysses S. Grant
captured Vicksburg.
A Confederate fort that over looked
Mississippi River.
The capture gave the Union control of the
river, splitting the Confederate in half.
After 4 years of fighting, the soldiers
finally laid their weapons down.
The Civil War was over.
