Lincoln’s friend
• Fredrick Douglass meet with Lincoln to tell him
about the mistreatment of slaves in the war
• Douglass was the only black man at Lincoln’s
inaugural address
• Lincoln greeted Douglass with “Here come my
friend Douglass”
• At Lincoln’s inaugural address Douglass felt like
a “Man among men”
Speeches and sayings
• Fredrick Douglass gave lots of speeches here
are some of them
• He wrote “we were waiting and listing for a bolt
from the sky…we were watching…by the dim
light of stars of a new day we were long for the
answer to agonizing prayers of centuries
• We are all liberated by the [emancipation]
proclamation
Civil War
• Fredrick Douglass encouraged blacks to join to the
war
• He got 10% of blacks to join the war then the union
started to win the war
• He told Lincoln to get people to treat black soldiers
better
• Three of his sons joined the civil war
