TEXTURE
What is TEXTURE in music?
 Did you know that there are pieces of music
where the COMPOSER uses the instruments
of the orchestra to tell a story? The term for
this is
SYMPHONIC POEM
What is TEXTURE in music?
 Many times a COMPOSER will use a story
that has been around for many years and use
the instruments of the ORCHESTRA to bring
the story to life!
 How are instruments used? Often flutes are
used to sound like birds, oboes like ducks, and
BIG LOW instruments (like the tuba and
double bass) for instruments that are BIG and
SLOW.
What is TEXTURE in music?
 Some examples of TEXTURE or SYMPHONIC POEMS are:
 “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”
 Based on the poem by German poet Goethe
 Music written by Paul Dukas in 1897
 Can be seen “brought to life” in animation by the Walt Disney
company in the film “Fantasia”
