Origins of the Show
• Was the show based on something else
(like a book, movie, play, etc.)? If so,
what?
• When was this show first performed?
Where?
• When (if ever) was it first performed on
Broadway?
• Include major awards (Tonys, Oscars, etc.)
Plot
• Summary of the basic storyline. KEEP IT
GENERAL!!! Too much detail will be
confusing.
Main Characters
• Two – five characters who drive the story
line
• Include names of famous actors who
played these roles on Broadway or in the
film version
• If you don’t know whether your actors are
“famous” or not, ask someone older than
you! (like Mrs. Barthel) 
Memorable Songs
• These should be songs that people who
haven’t seen the whole show may still
have heard (on the radio, at a dance, etc.)
• If you don’t know, ask someone OLDER
than you! (Like your parents,
grandparents, teachers, or Mrs. Barthel!)
• You should have a complete song list from
your research, but only list 2-3 songs here.
Composer
• The person / people who wrote the music
• Give us a quick biography of the
composer(s)
• Be sure to include other musicals s/he
composed
Lyricist
• The person / people who wrote the lyrics
(the words to the songs)
• This MIGHT be the same person as the
composer (in which case, identify the
person as composer/lyricist)
• Give us a quick biography of the lyricist
• Be sure to include other musicals for
which s/he wrote the lyrics
Playwright
• The person / people who wrote the script
(the spoken lines)
• Usually identified as “Book by _______”
• This MIGHT be the same person as the
lyricist (in which case indicate
playwright/lyricist)
• Give us a quick biography of the
playwright
• Include other plays/shows s/he wrote
Technical Elements
• What does the show require in the way of:
– Set
– Costumes
– Lighting
– Props
– Special Effects (flying, “magic,” smoke, etc.)
• Be sure to include PHOTOS from other
productions, both professional and, if you
can find them, high school.
Music / Orchestration
• What does the show require in the way of
music? Is it written for a piano only?
Small band (3-4 musicians)? Full
orchestra (20ish musicians)?
• How difficult is the music to sing? How
difficult is it to play? If you can’t answer
these questions, ask Mrs. Barthel!
What do YOU think?
• Have you seen this show live? Have you
seen a film version of it?
• Do you like the show? Why / why not?
• What is your favorite part of the show?
• If you were able to be in the show, what
role would you like to play if you could cast
yourself? Why?
