2 siblings: Richard and Judy
Grew up in L.A.
Brothers: Richard and
Danny
Grew up playing the violin, then taught
himself how to play guitar, bass, trumpet, and
many other instruments
Had a natural talent, with very little influence,
but much support, by those close to him
Moved to Europe with Richard after high
school graduation in 1971
The two had a music act together in a traveling
European Troupe
First record of Danny’s composition
Started in Los Angeles in 1972 by Danny and his older
brother, Richard, after returning home from Europe
Avant-garde in every sense of the word
15 members playing a large selection of instruments;
sometimes up to 30 instruments playing during one act
A smaller, more rocked styled version of the
Mystic Knights
Only 8 performers, easier to travel
Came together in 1980, as Richard left to direct
leaving Danny in charge
First EP released in 1981, “Only a Lad”, landing
their first record deal with A&M Records
Released in 1981 by A&M Records
First radio hit
First film together: Pee Wee’s Big Adventure,
1985
First Blockbuster film: Batman, 1989
Small cult following
Asked lead guitarist, Steve Bartek, to compose with
him
First and ONLY Grammy Elfman ever won for the
original score
Made 11 movies together
"He totally understands the tone I like, which is
usually an even mix of funny, tragic, overly
dramatic, all at the same time.” – Tim Burton
First
Blockbuster
Score
Won a Grammy
Award for Best
Original Score
Only 5 member band now with a “new”
shortened name
Change happened early 1990’s
Broke up in 1995 after infamous Halloween
concert
Released in 1987
One of the few
“light hearted”
songs the group
released
“Quite simply… the time was right. After 17 years
together, it finally occurred to me that we had
survived about 16 years longer than I had expected…
pretty good by any standards, I think. It’s been good,
crazy times, and I’m always amazed how loyal our
fans have been, but I think it’s better to let things go
before they turn sour. Also, scientifically speaking,
modern research has recently proven that after a band
has been together longer than a decade, the risk of the
dinosaur factor kicking in increases exponentially
each year thereafter. In short, it’s been fun. Adios,
amigos.” – Danny Elfman
1997: two original scores for Good Will
Hunting and Men in Black nominated for
Oscars
Scored over 80 films from 1982-2011
