Game
Superior 1st Division Bands will…
• Walk in the room quietly and focus on the
job to be done!
• Listen to their band director and make eye
contact with them as they are talking
• Listen to the judges and make eye contact
with the judge as they are talking
• Not make ANY noises (with your voice,
your feet/hands, your instrument, etc)
Superior 1st Division Bands will…
• Pay attention and act like it’s the most
exciting piece of music ever!
• Finger/Position along as the band teacher
explains the piece
• Sit up tall the entire time with great posture
• Look the same as everyone else in their
section
• Do EVERY detail that the band director
asks
During the explanation period…
• You MUST finger/position along as the band
director explains and counts through the piece
• You MUST sit with 1st division posture the entire
time
• You MUST look for places that the composer is
trying to trick you and be ready to play
confidently
• You MUST play the game and act like you are
about to play an AWESOME piece of music
• You MUST follow instructions and do whatever
the band director asks you to do the FIRST time
you are asked
Tricks for Sight Reading
• When the judge asks you to turn the piece
over to make sure you have the correct
music…
– Look at the key signature, time signature, and
scan over the entire piece for tricky rhythms
or notes
Tricks for Sight Reading
• Play confidently all the time! Even if your
part says play mp or p, you will need to
have a confident sound. Don’t be shy!
• USE FIRM ARTICULATION!
– Many bands will not get a 1st division because
the judges can’t hear their rhythms clearly.
They describe them as sounding “mushy.”
Don’t be “mushy.” Use a clear tone and clear
articulation!
Tricks to Sight Reading
Check in with the band director often to
make sure you are on the correct beat!
NEVER GIVE UP! If you get lost, LOOK UP!
LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN!
WE WANT TO BE 1st DIVISION!
• To be 1st division:
– You have to LOOK 1st Division
– You have to ACT 1st Division
– You have to THINK 1st Division
– You have to PERFORM 1st Division
