Directing
DIRECTING
– The director's job is to be a synthesizer - an
artist who brings everything (writing, sound,
cinematography, editing, etc.) together.
Directing
As the "storyteller" of the film, he takes the
dialogue and events described in the
screenplay and gives them a visual - andaural life that literally "tells the story" with
the kind of specific detail we expect from a
real-life experience.
Directing
The director's work can be divided into
three areas:
– pre-production,
– production,
– post-production.
Directing
Pre-Production
– The period before filming begins
– Write a script
Spurred by actor or director to a producer

Directing
"I don't understand why we have to experiment with film.
I think everything should be done on paper. A musician
has to do it, a composer. He puts a lot of dots down and
beautiful music comes out. And I think that students
should be taught to visualize. That's the one thing
missing in all this. The one thing that the student has got
to do is to learn that there is a rectangle up there - a
white rectangle in a theatre - and it has to be filled." Alfred Hitchcock
Directing
Rehearsing
– Director guides each actor in their role.
– The director helps develop the relationships between the
characters.
– Complicated scenes require rehearsal too. (Stunts or other
special scene prep)
Directing
cinematography
– In pre-production, the director sets up the
sequences of shots that will tell a good story
– working with the cinematographer, the
director will decide on an approach to camera
angles and movement, lighting, and lens
choice.
– Create a schedule of shooting
Directing
Production Design
– Ultimately, everything is on the director. Atmosphere,
setting, sequence, mood, acting, and so forth. The
director has the final say.
Directing
Production
– At this point the director is under constant
pressure to stick to the schedule and budget
planned in pre-production, despite the
inevitable problems which will arise.
– At the same tine, he must also have the
flexibility to be able to see opportunities for
improvisation and other changes which may
enhance the film.
When things go wrong
Directing
A director's job is to create an atmosphere
of calm concentration and security.
Have a relaxed mood in the studio, and
even if we have to work in a small area,
we stay out of each other's way.
There can't be any rush, and we have to
follow our schedule.
Directing
During the Shoot
– The director must constantly weigh and
balance the suggestions of the cast and crew
with his own instinctive sense of direction.
– A key quality is the ability to communicate his
ideas clearly to others.
Directing
At the end of shooting each day, the filmed
scenes are developed in the laboratory, and
these "dailies" are shown to the director to make
sure that no mistakes were made which might
require the scenes to be re-shot.
It is at this point that the director constantly reevaluates the effectiveness of the scenes shot
and is perhaps inspired to make changes which
will improve the rest of the shoot.
Directing
Post-Production
– once the production has "wrapped" the editor goes to
work compiling a "rough cut" for the director.
– It is at this stage that the director begins to work with
the footage, possibly changing the order of scenes
and eliminating others to sharpen the effect of the
overall scenes,
– and to see that the timing is in harmony with his
intended rhythm of the film.
Directing
Editing
– best directors visualize each scene in their
minds and shoot to obtain this perfected
vision.
Directing
The scoring of music and sound must also
suit the mood the director has tried to
create with the other film elements.
– The tonal quality,
– the tempo,
– and the suggested time period must all be in
line with the director's vision.
Directing
This process of fine-tuning yields a "finecut" which is then shown to the composer
and sound people in a "spotting session,"
they discuss which moments will be
underscored,
which will contain certain sound effects.
Directing
From this point, depending on the power of the
director, he may have a hand in determining the
"final cut."
Otherwise the producer and distributor could reedit and sometimes re shoot scenes and alter
the film to their liking and their notion of what the
public would like and pay money to see.
The director may even have a hand in
constructing the film's advertising campaign.
Directing
"I enjoy playing the audience like a piano."
- Alfred Hitchcock
